Facel entered the automobile business as a supplier of special bodies for Panhard, Delahaye and Simca. The company was headquartered in Paris.
Jean Daninos decided not to limit himself to luxurious and expensive models, but to develop small ones as well. Ones that could compete with the sporty Alfa Romeos, Porsches and Triumphs that were popular at the time. Thus, the Facellia – with a 4-cylinder, 1.6-litre, 115-horsepower engine assembled in France – was launched in September 1959. But the French-built engine was not reliable, the cars were being brought in for warranty repairs practically on a daily basis, and Facel Vega needed a quick fix. Having decided to stop investing in improvements on the old engine, the French went for what was reliable. They started putting a Volvo gearbox and the Volvo B18 engine from the P1800 model into the Facellia, And in order to avoid any association with unreliability, the car that came out in 1963 was called the Facel III, a name with a better history. The Facel 6 (six cylinder) was the last model built by the company, but it was only produced in 44 units between May and September 1964.
Only 433 Coupés were produced, making it a rare but recognizable and iconic car.
Facel Vega Facel III, year 1964. Colour blue metallic combined with a beige vinyl interior, pale beige carpet, and beige head lining. This wonderful Facel III was sold new in Switzerland where it was first registered in 1965.
Between 1977 and 1979 the bodywork was restored. In the early 1980s the car was sold to the Netherlands where it lived with one owner for about 40 years! After purchase the Dutchman drove 1900 kilometres with the Facel III before it was garaged from 1981 until 2021. When the car was bought from the long-time owner they brought the car back to life with an overhaul of the carburettors, renewal of the petrol tank, fresh rubber hoses, air-filters, sparkplugs, and fluids. The interior was cleaned, and the headlining was renewed. The current owner bought this very original Facel III in January 2022.
The owner improved the Facel with a full repaint of the body in the original colour, the installation of an air-conditioning unit in the boot, and the fitment of original specification Michelin XAS 185-14 tyres. This wonderful Facel III is in a very good and remarkably original condition, the car shows all the original details, and the original interior is in a beautiful condition! The car is fitted with two bullet-style wing mounted rear view mirrors and a vintage car stereo. This is a wonderful Facel III in a beautiful condition and mechanically and technically up to date! The car is ready for a new owner to be enjoyed!
